For many years Villevoye’s work has been strongly influenced by his visits to the Asmat area in Indonesian Papua, the former Dutch New Guinea. The Asmat people attribute a great spiritual and emotional importance to trees, out of which they chipped ancestral statues. When walking through the woods around a psychiatric clinic where he was invited to stay in the guest pavilion and commissioned to do an art work, he would occasionally spot one or more of the clinics residents, either in the distance or rushing past. The presence of these people with a different personal culture of whose existence he had been completely unaware before he came to live there, reminded him of the Asmat people he had befriended. Curious to get in touch with them, he suggested that as part of the art project, they would carve their personal signs on the trees. Strolling through the woods, the residents would then be confronted with their own signs and realize their presence there: ‘I am here/ I was here.’
