In 1994 Gilles Peress traveled to Rwanda three times, observing and documenting the carnage among Hutus and Tutsis. He took jarring and intrepid photographs of genocide and a society in the process of self-destruction.
This is not simply a book of news photographs. In arranging the photographs into sub-sections-The Sin, Purgatory, The Judgment, and Two Moments in the Life of a Killer-Peress created a structure that attempts to make sense out of the chaos. The Silence takes into account the human need for storytelling to give life meaning and structure. The Silence is not just evidence of the Rwandan tragedy but a challenge to our conceptions about the deceptive stability of civil society.

Peress' images take us to the limits of life confronting us with the darkest sides of life. Their disturbing precision is reminiscent of paintings by Hieronymus Bosch or Francisco Goya. Peress knows that in order to do justice to those who have died, we have to face what these events might reveal about human nature-about us.
