Mortals
Mortals is an impressive series encompassing two years of the artist’s work. The double portraits of four elderly men and four elderly women use recent portrait photographs on the one side and old photographs of the same men and women on the other: photographs of when they were young. The result is a strong unity that expresses the circle of life. In this series, Luyten employs, yet again, gum bichromate photographic techniques that wrap the images in soft colours and sepia hues.
