Until the Paper Tears was an exhibition curated by MA (Fine Arts) candidate Heleen Schröder, featuring works by the late Verona Sparrius (née Higgs) – a Pretoria-based visual artist, printmaker and teacher – presented in partial fulfilment of the Master of Fine Arts (Curatorial Practice). The show centres on Verona Higgs's rarely seen book works, connecting them with graphic and paper works spanning her career. A selection from Higgs's collection of contemporary South African art, mostly by other women artists, shows her milieu. Parallel to the exhibition, a study taking a critical and reflective approach to artists' legacies is in preparation. Heleen Schröder was a student and colleague of Verona Higgs, and the attentive inclusion of some of Schröder's own work highlights how close connection inspires exchange and profoundly shapes individual artistic practice.
