Coming up for Air is the result of Stephen Gills long-term photographic body of work made in Japan between 2008 & 2009. Coming up for air – is the result of a long-term photographic body of work made in Japan between 2008 & 2009 over the course of three visits to the country. Though the images were made in Japan they are not essentially about Japan and perhaps more of a reaction to my life in London at the time. The thought behind the images is a kind of fictional aquatic world as if viewed from the other side of an aquarium looking outwards. The book is made up of faint and barely audible traces from the real world like imagine holding your breath and putting your fingers in your ears to mute the turbulence of the modern world. Unlike the other more descritpive photographic series I had made at the time, this time the information in the images has been starved or completely denied, like muffled sounds when swimming beneath water.
