Mika Rottenberg – Dough Cheese Squeeze and Tropical Breeze – Video works 2003-2010
English, 205 pp, 24 x 16 cm, hardcover
The first major publication on Rottenberg’s work, published by Gregory R. Miller & Co., in partnership with de Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam and in association with M-Museum Leuven and Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York, on the occasion of her retrospective exhibition at de Appel (March 12 – May 8, 2011), will provide the most comprehensive analysis of Rottenberg’s oeuvre to date.
The monograph includes extensive sections on key video installations: Tropical Breeze (2004), Mary’s Cherries (2004), Dough (2006), Cheese (2008), culminating with Rottenberg’s latest work, Squeeze (2010). Associative sequences of images and previously unpublished source material relating to the major works are interwoven among critical essays from diverse perspectives.
Two distinct texts consider Rottenberg’s most recent work: Feminist film theorist Rottenberg’s Linda Williams (University of California, Berkeley) connects Squeeze to the history of Surrealist cinema, while Tel-Aviv based poet Efrat Mishori explores Squeeze as a multidirectional “video-octopus.” Hsuan L. Hsu (University of California, Davis) provides in-depth analysis of the relationship between repetitive, physical labor and post-industrial production throughout each of Rottenberg’s scenarios. New interviews with hired performers who advertise their extreme physiques on the internet provide unique insight into Rottenberg’s process of blending fact and fiction.
