"The notebook *De Grens, die Grenze, la Frontière* reminds me of the first eight years of my life. During that period, I often crossed borders. Borders between the Netherlands and Belgium and between the Netherlands and Germany. But also between Belgium and France and between France and Germany. What united the border officials from the various countries was their fanatical hunt for contraband. They also had in common an unbridled desire to affix stamps. Even if the sheet where the stamp was supposed to go was already full. The new stamp simply went over the old one.

The drawings are maps of the surroundings of the border towns. On the opposite page, there are as many stamps as the number of times the border in question was crossed."
