Increased possiblities to visualize the interior of the human body and its organs have raised concern among some artists of our time. The engagement of applied medical imagery in the arts has come as a response to the recent developent of specialized visualization techniques. The highly technical and rather abstract images produced by for example Computed Tomography (CT), sonograms and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) have provoked involvement among artists, perhaps especially among female artists for whom some of the above imaging techniques present urgent concerns about the surveillance of the (female) body and raise issues about class, gender and identity. It is obvious that the tools we use to represent ourselves also effect our perception of ourselves as human beings.
