‘The work of the Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis could be called an ode to architecture. It seems as though Cabrita Reis draws his inspiration from the street - not one in our parts but from Southern Europe; a drainage canal or the restoration of a church can serve as an occasion for one of his 'edifices' that consist of stacked-up bits of wood, plaster, rubber or glass. But the works of Cabrita Reis refer to more than structures alone; they are drenched in the atmosphere of the workplace, of the conversations there, of the sultry air of a late afternoon, of smells that put down deeper roots in our memory than do images alone. 'A theatre without speech' - that is how the critic Germano Celant describes his work, referring to the fact that it appeals to other senses as well as sight. For the artist, making art is equivalent to the creation of memories; it means formulating the sediment of a complete experience. This is the first time that a retrospective of Cabrita Reis is presented in Holland.
