Dennis Hopper (Kansas, Dodge City, 1936) is best known for his films: as an actor and director (including Easy Rider, Colors, Rebel Without a Cause). This publication focuses on his visual work: paintings, photography and assemblages. The [visual] work is influenced in many ways by Hopper's films: he incorporates photos and film stills into his canvases and combines various works into diptychs and polyptychs. Rudi Fuchs and Jan Hein Sassen, director and curator of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, analyse Hopper's visual art, his relationship to the American West Coast art scene and his way of working. Hopper's contacts with other artists, including Edward Kienholz, Richard Diebenkorn, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, are also discussed. The book captures the atmosphere of Hopper's artistic, social and personal world. This publication shows the artist's versatility and the ambiguity of his image: from tough, public cult figure to concentrated, introvert painter.
