De legendarische Nederlandse Nul-beweging uit de jaren zestig staat de laatste jaren zowel in Nederland als internationaal weer in de belangstelling. Het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam organiseerde in september 2011 voor het eerst sinds vijftig jaar in Nederland een internationale tentoonstelling over Nul. De komende jaren staan ook belangrijke tentoonstellingen in de Verenigde Staten, Duitsland en Engeland gepland. De publicatie nul = O biedt een rijk geïllustreerd internationaal perspectief op het werk van de Nederlandse Nul-kunstenaars en hun buitenlandse geestverwanten. In de publicatie nul = 0. de nederlandse nul-groep in een internationale context reconstrueren toonaangevende internationale auteurs de ontwikkelingen en samenwerkingsverbanden van de Nederlandse Nul-groep met zijn internationale geestverwanten: de kunstenaars van de Duitse Zero, het Franse Nouveau Réalisme, de Italiaanse Azimut- en de Japanse Gutai-groep als ook individuen als Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama en Lucio Fontana. Met het herontdekken van elementen als tijd en ruimte, licht en beweging door de huidige generatie kunstenaars zijn de verrichtingen van deze kunstenaars weer bijzonder actueel. De leden van de Nederlandse Nul-groep verklaarden verschijnselen uit de werkelijkheid tot kunst en benadrukten in hun werk de schoonheid van sereniteit, herhaling en eenvormigheid. De Nul-kunstenaars namen afstand van het stereotiepe beeld van de bohémien in schilderskiel en werden geïnspireerd door de technische verworvenheden van de opkomende consumptiemaatschappij. Gezamenlijk werkten ze aan manifesten en publicaties en organiseerden ze internationale tentoonstellingen met gelijkgezinden. Ze zetten hiermee de toon voor een nieuw artistiek klimaat in Nederland en stimuleerden met de kunstenaars van de internationale ZERO-beweging een omwenteling in de beeldende kunst die vooruitliep op de conceptuele kunst, land art en minimal art.
The publication nul = 0: The Dutch Nul Group in an International Context reveals the artistic principles of the Nul movement. Leading international writers reconstruct the developments and collaborations of the Dutch Nul group with its spiritual brethren: the artists of the German Zero, the French Nouveau Réalisme, Italy’s Azimut Group and the Japanese Gutai Group, as well as individual artists like Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama and Lucio Fontana. Given the current generation of artists’ rediscovery of such elements as time and space, light and motion, the achievements of these artists are now more relevant than ever. The members of the legendary Dutch Nul Group, declared phenomena issued from reality to be art and emphasized the beauty of serenity, repetition and uniformity in their work. The Nul artists rejected the stereotypical idea of the bohemian in a paint-splattered smock and were inspired by the technological advances of the emerging consumer society. Together they worked on manifestos and publications and organized international exhibitions with like-minded artists. In the process they set the tone for a new artistic climate in the Netherlands and, with the artists of the international ZERO movement, contributed to a watershed in the visual arts that presaged conceptual art, land art and minimalist art.
