(London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] This timely artist’s book reproduces images representing the over 100 people killed due to terrorism and other violence in Germany between 1967 and 1993. From the publisher (translated from German): “1967: the student Benno Ohnesorg was shot on a demonstration in Berlin. 1993: the Federal Border Police official Michael Newrzella and the terrorist Wolfgang Grams died in an attempted arrest operation. 26 years lie between both events, in which time over 100 people met a violent death; a huge number, of whom we are conscious of only a few. All died in connection with the escalation of force and terrorism, which had its origins in the late 60’s with the Baader Meinhof. This book tries to emphasize graphically the extent of these victim numbers. All pictures shown come from the contemporary printed media. This book is an attempt to show this history to younger Germans and to document retrospectively the recent past.”

1967 wurde auf einer Demonstration in Berlin der Student Benno Ohnesorg erschossen. 1993 kamen in Bad Kleinen der Bundesgrenzschutzbeamte Michael Newrzella und der Terrorist Wolfgang Grams ums Leben. Zwischen beiden Ereignissen liegen 26 Jahre, in denen insgesamt über 100 Menschen einen gewaltsamen Tod fanden. Eine Zahl von Toten, deren Höhe nur wenigen bewusst ist. Alle stehen im Zusammenhang mit der Eskalation von Gewalt und Terrorismus, die ihre Ursprünge in der Zeit der späten 60er Jahre hatten. Das Buch versucht, das Ausmass dieser Opferzahlen bildhaft zu vermitteln. Alle Bilder, die gezeigt werden, entstammen den Printmedien aus der Zeit. Es ist ein Versuch, die Ereignisse der jüngeren deutschen Geschichte zu betrachten und auf das Ausmass des Geschehenen hinzudeuten.
