Eduard Isaac Asser, lawyer in Amsterdam, was one of the first in the Netherlands to experiment with the new medium of photography. He took photographs in his spare time and for pleasure. Initially he dealt with daguerreotypes, later he concentrated on the paper negative. His oeuvre, which mainly consists of portraits and cityscapes, has been fully preserved and depicted and described in the catalog part of the book.

Thee eighth in the series 'Monographs on Dutch Photographers' tells the hitherto unknown tale of one of the first photographers in the Netherlands. Asser drew upon the Dutch fine art tradition of still lifes, townscapes, and self- portraiture and in later years invented a process which enabled photographs to be printed from a lithographic stone. This classical documentation and impeccable presentation of his photographic legacy includes 15 daguerreotypes and two hundred paper photographs.
