Andy Warhol, Hammer and Sickle

Paperback, softback (with poster cover), 32 pp., illustrated throughout in colour and b&w, 200mm x 145mm,

The featured drawings were produced in 1976 – 1977, during the Cold War, when the hammer and sickle was the best known symbol for the enemy, the USSR. By using this symbol of communism as an object for sale in a capitalist economy, Warhol’s drawings were seen as an ironic commentary on the war. The series can also be seen to turn this symbol into a post-modern still-life.
